Why is my new plaster cracking?
Fine hairline cracks in new plaster are usually shrinkage as it dries and are easily filled. Wide, spreading or stepped cracks point to movement or an application problem and should be checked by a plasterer.
- Drying too fast (direct heat) increases shrinkage cracking.
- Cracks along board joints suggest missing tape.
- Cracks that reopen after filling need investigation, not another fill.
